Diabetes Care Discussion

Date: Wednesday, May 8, 2024

Time: 12-1 PM

Location: MET 315

The Value Based Medicine SIG is so excited to announce a value-based diabetes care discussion led by Dr. Thomas (our outstanding lecturer from ERM)! It will be a great way to integrate what we just learned about diabetes in ERM (one of the most common diseases we will all encounter) with the realities of everyday clinical practice. For those of you who took or are planning to take the value based medicine elective, this is a great event to put towards your two event requirement for the letter of distinction.

Lunch will be served! Please RSVP by 11:59pm on May 4 so we can be sure to order food for you.

2024 VBM Case Competition

UCSD SOM is excited to participate in the Medical College of Georgia's Value-Based Care Competition! This is a great opportunity to apply concepts of value-based care in a team-based setting, network with physicians with quality improvement experience, and compete for a chance to participate in a national competition! If interested, please fill out this form by January 28th, 2024. Please reach out to Jean, Daisy, Sacha or Sahana if you have any questions!

High-Value Care Initiative Panel

The UC San Diego Value-Based Medicine and Internal Medicine Student Interest Groups are proud to present our first HVC initiative panel. During the panel we discussed:

Journal Club and Advocacy Lab on Financial Toxicity in Cancer Care

Thank you to everyone that came to the first Journal Club / Advocacy Lab of the year for Health Equity!

This Journal Club and Advocacy Lab focused on the financial costs of cancer care in the U.S., the detrimental consequences they have on patients and caregivers, and how we as future providers can make change. We discussed the article “Financial toxicity in cancer care: Prevalence, causes, and consequences” (read it HERE) during the Journal Club on September 27th. The following week, on October 4th, we had small group discussions facilitated by experts in the field. Each group focused on a different aspect of financial toxicity, ranging from pharmaceutical pricing to coordination of care, with the goal of identifying areas for student advocacy and action.

Discussing costs of care in the U.S. can be challenging, confusing, and discouraging. Answering patients’ questions and advocating for their needs can be even harder. Thank you to those who joined us as we tried to make sense of these important issues and envision a path forward.

Led by: Emma Williams (MS2), Karthik Ramesh (MS2), Victoria Groysberg (MS2), Varsha Prakash (MS2), Job Shiach (MS2), and Lucas Patel (MS2)
